It’s a Mad Men Weekend

Manhattans and Stuffed Celery

“Advertising is based on one thing, happiness. And you know what happiness is? Happiness is the smell of a new car. It’s freedom from fear. It’s a billboard on the side of the road that screams reassurance that whatever you are doing is okay. You are okay.” – Smoke Gets in Your Eyes

It’s a Mad, Mad weekend…And so it begins, any excuse for a party and certainly my favorite show back on TV tomorrow is good enough reason to celebrate and fill this weekend and many others with a few 60’s touches, Mad Men style food maybe even a fancy cocktail or two and a few appetizers.  So many choices and everything so simple compared to a lot of meals that I make these days, maybe a lesson to be learned, simple is good.

While perusing the book index I noticed the lack of vegetable dishes, I normally will have at least two vegetables to serve for dinner, so starting with a gazpacho appetizer garnished with a few shrimp I’ll call it vegetables #1.  I quickly settled on the rib eye steak dinner for Sunday dinner because I have them and it is cooking out of the freezer etc. week again, a Wedge salad with blue cheese dressing and a yet to be decided dessert…strawberry milkshakes?

We had Manhattans, Saturday with “Stuffed Celery”, Carla’s potato salad and grilled a few kosher hot dogs, well maybe the Mad Men gang didn’t have kosher dogs in the 60’s, but it was a casual dinner in the back yard.    The potato salad is very good by the way with fresh cucumbers instead of pickles and I tossed in come diced celery, but the dressing was one of the best that I’ve ever made, so simple even with the substitute that I made with Greek yogurt standing in for the sour cream…a keeper recipe.

More to come before the show begins…
